Did you notice the very fashionable reindeer making their debut at Suburban Square this holiday season? Well, meet the designer responsible for their holiday attire: ChaCha Hudson, founder of Sewcial Cafe and local artist! With a degree in fashion studies and a lifetime of design & creation under her belt, she founded her cafe to create a space for other lovers of sewing. Suddenly, when the cafe was closed due to COVID-19, the only question on her mind was, “what now?”
ChaCha saw a dire need for PPE masks for healthcare workers and jumped right on it. She and her team were losing sleep because of it. They were donating masks to homeless shelters, hospitals, nonprofits, rehabilitation centers, and anyone who needed them.
It was not until Hudson cut the top of her thumb off when she realized she needed to slow down! She shut down and focused on recovering until the project with Suburban Square came along. She was glad to be able to switch to something light-hearted and was excited to dress eight reindeer in holiday gowns.
“I hope that people will find joy when they look at them,” ChaCha said. “It reminds me of a fashion exhibit, but instead of being on people or mannequins, the outfits are on reindeer. Hopefully, people can view it like that: an outdoor art & fashion exhibit to enjoy, take in and maybe find some inspiration from.”
The reindeer also have fashionable face masks, as a “reminder that we all can get glammed up and still look great with our masks on,” according to ChaCha.
For ChaCha, this exhibit is all about hope. She encourages people to support small businesses and artists that are adapting to the new normal and asks the art community to keep dreaming big and be beacons of hope for the community in these darker times. “I hope that everybody who sees these reindeer experience joy and appreciation for the good things in life right now,” ChaCha told us.
We’re so excited to have ChaCha on board for this holiday season at the Square. Be sure to stop by and enjoy these fashionable art exhibits while you can!
